A PREGNANT WOMAN KNITTING GERMAN GROBE (1857-1938)

GERMAN GROBE (1857-1938) was an artist who was very well respected which is borne out in the prices achieved at auctions in Germany and the UK. Prices have run in to the thousands. Oil on board – ‘A PREGNANT WOMAN KNITTING OUTDOORS’. Unsigned but the label to verso is in the same hand writing as the label of the other painting we have listed by the same hand which is signed. In addition the style of this painting is clearly that of German Grobe. To the bottom left is the number ’31’ which could be the date it was painted i,e 1931. Appprox measurements inc frame: H:54 W:41cm D:3cm Condition – Scuffs and marks to frame but in overall good condition. We have another painting listed by the same hand. BIOGRAPHY: German Grobe was son of the merchant Johannes Grobe and his wife Amalie, born Eberhard. After he in his native city first lessons with George Cornicelius had received, he attended from 1873 to 1876 the Stadel Art Institute in Frankfurt am Main, where he student of Eduard Von Steinle was. In October 1877 Grobe went to Ludwig Von Lofftzat the Munich Art Academy and moved in 1879 to the Art Academy in Dusseldorf, where he was first a student of Eduard von Gebhardt....more
