A Quiet Afternoon, Modernist Swedish Oil

An intimate and beautifully executed composition of an interior setting, painted in oil onto board. In the center of the composition, we see a seated figure reading a book. Surrounding her are all her homely objects – a potted plant with flowers in bloom, and a painting on the wall. We get a sense this space is lived in and well-loved. The artist has worked in an expressive manner, using loose and distinct brushstrokes to compose the scene. There is an illustrative quality to the painting, giving us some insight into the artist’s method of working.
