Lovely antique deed box with the original gold insignia of D.E.S.S. and date Oct 1880. It's so unusual as the interior still has most of the original sections and removable trays and boxes. I'm unsure of its original use, but no doubt it was intended to hold valuables, possibly money as the box has a lock (the key is sadly lost). As with all my vintage and antique pieces this has bumps and blemishes that reflect its previous life adding to its character and charm - there are scratches and paint losses to the exterior and a few minor dents on the lid. The corners of the lid have split but this doesn't affect its functionality. There is also a small split in one corner of the main box. The interior has losses to the paintwork and one dividing section (where the metal flap can be raised) has come away where soldered on one edge.
