Very handsome English antique “pot” harness brass. This traditional bullseye design with a patriotic red white and blue ceramic (pot) centre is a lovely collector’s piece, in beautiful condition. A larger brass, and a particularly fine example of this scarce sought after design, in great antique condition with the colours still bright and unfaded. Minor scratches and pits commensurate with age and use, a lovely patina of age and wear, and a good heft. These particular “pot” types were produced between around 1890 and 1920, and were often given as prizes at cart horse parades and ploughing competitions. Often in patriotic colours, they were worn with pride, sometimes accompanying rosettes on the harness. Horse brasses have been documented as being worn as amulets or charms by working horses since the mid 19th century, and they probably have been in use in some form since medieval times.
