A very fine antique Wedgwood plate, depicting a noble stag and hind - a very rare and special piece, highly collectible. The Formosa design is an under glaze transfer, with handpainted detailing and gold highlights, in lovely rich vibrant colours, measures 24cm across. The incised Wedgwood date mark on the back is only partially visible, but sources and research tell me this it dates from the 1900’s, up to 1906. Josiah Wedgwood was greatly inspired by the pottery works of Etruria, Italy, and opened his Etruria factory in England in 1769. A wide range of designs was produced there, including this Formosa range of dinner plates. All of the Formosa designs have in common this floral border with the Greek key motif around the inner rim. The centres contained scenes, mostly depicting animals. I’ve seen other animals from the series, but this is the first time I’ve come across the stag and hind design, so it’s a rarity.
