Antique Georgian Oak Mule Chest with Drawers

Georgian oak mule chest/blanket box with drawers, circa 1780. Measurements: 151cm Width x 55cm Length x 84cm Height This 18th century oak mule chest has a moulded, hinged top, opening to reveal a generous storage area. The chest retains its original candle box, with a hinged oak lid, to the left-hand side. The front has 3 arch panels accompanied by two drawers fitted with four Victorian cut glass knobs. Good quality wide twin inset oak side panels adorn the sides of the chest; the back retains the original rough-hewn oak backboards. The solid oak lid retains its original colour & patination, a rich warm oak colour that can only be achieved through age. The lid compliments the dark blue painted exterior. The drawer linings and bottoms are constructed of pine, as are the wide floorboards in the base of the chest. Fitted with one brass escutcheon and lock. However, there is no key! This type of furniture would have primarily been used for storing bedding and clothes. In the eighteenth century, built-in wardrobes did not exist! A mule chest was often the only item of furniture that a family owned. With sought-after proportions, this item would look great in a variety of rooms....more
