A stunning Art Deco decorative Burleigh Ware wall plate by Burgess & Leigh. A blue sponged background is hand painted with vibrant yellow and blue flowers. The rim is gilt and on the reverse are three holes to enable the plate to be safely hung. The beehive mark on the reverse dates it to the 1930s. It measures 25cm in diameter. It is in an excellent condition with only a couple of tiny nicks to the rim. Please see the photographs which form part of the description. The pottery, based at the Middleport Works, began trading during the 1850s, changing its name to Burgess and Leigh in 1877. The pottery initially focused on the production of toilet and general earthenware products. After World War I, a decline in demand led Burgess & Leigh to branch out into the tableware and other decorative products under the brand Burleigh Ware, the name being an amalgamation of the business’s name....more
