Set of 6 petite mugs in Aylesford Friars' characteristic Tenmoku glaze, with colour variations ranging from rust to black. Clearly impressed 'The Friars Aylesford England' on the base, the set is in excellent condition. The pottery at Aylesford, a Carmelite religious community in Kent, was established in 1954 under David Leach, son of Bernard who, alongside his colleague Shoji Hamada, famously introduced elements of the traditional Japanese potter's art to the British Studio Pottery scene in the interwar years. These small, tactile cups sit comfortably in the hand, drawing upon the tradition of Japanese inspiration and design. The shape likely dates from the time of Colin Pearson at the pottery c. 1958.
