the first thing that strikes you in this lovely oil painting is the dramatic way in which the church is lit. Obviously the focal point of the painting, your eye is immediately drawn to this central feature before wandering to the secondary details. Lower left foreground there are workers busily loading a barge under the shadow of ominously stormy clouds, while middle distance shows another small vessel with its sails lit by a ray of sunlight. a solitary figure walks towards the shadowy cottage behind the church, leading our eyes once again to the fantastic portrayal of light in the centre of the picture. The fencing, trees and illuminated church wall contrast dramatically with the darkness of the clouds and foreground, with a soft pink hue in the sky immediately above the spire. Symbolism at its best! The longer i look at this painting the more I see. Supported in an ornate gilt frame measuring 70cm x 60cm, the visible image is 53cm x 43cm. There are two very small imperfections in the image near the top right corner which could be easily restored, but are barely noticeable.
