Briglin 'Sunflower' design teapot with cane handle. Stamped Briglin, with the addition of the initial CJ stamp for Michael Crosby Jones. Briglin pottery was set up in Baker Street in London's West End in 1948 by the potters Brigitte Goldschmidt and Eileen Lewenstein to produce affordable, useful homewares. Characterised by the use of a white glaze, and wax resist to reveal the deeply toned earthenware body typical of the Briglin studio, this is the smaller of the two standardware teapots shown in the 1976 catalogue. This example is likely to date from the early 1970s, and before Michael Crosby Jones left to set up his own pottery studio in 1971. By all accounts, Crosby Jones was an adventurous if eccentric figure, having been a police officer in Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe), a whaler, miner and novelist in Norway, before returning to the UK to discover his skill as a potter.
