The vase is a good example of the myriad of interpretations of modernism - both strident and delicate. The jardiniere was designed by Frantisek Vizner and is pattern no. 3236. Made by the Libochovice Czechoslovakia glassworks, part of the Sklo Union group. Heavy Crystal glass with deeply recessed bas relief - stridently architectural. Captures, and interacts with window light beautifully. It has some ‘crease marks’ from the pressed glass process on one facet’. This design is referenced in Mark Hill's book - High Sklo Low Sklo (pp 104): "The design shows Vizner's interest in the optical opportunities afforded by the protruding lenses, as well as a feeling for simple curving lines. The size and scale of the lenses and form give a 'massive' feel. The design also represents one facet of Vizner's designs that were ahead of others - simple geometric forms decorated with strong surface elements."
