George Herbert Buckingham Holland (what a name! 1901-1987) was born in Northampton, the son of a grocer. He studied at Leicester School of Art. He made his living painting portraits of Northampton dignitaries, but he also painted flowers, landscapes, town scenes and coastal scenes, mostly in oil. National Portrait Gallery, Royal Academy of Music and National Library of Wales hold his work. This portrait is quite different from his usual work. We were both immediately drawn to the 'character' in this paintings. I believe this is paper mounted on cardboard.
