An original oil painting signed by the Suffolk artist James Govier. It measures 39 cm high by 27 across. Please note this listing is for an UNFRAMED picture. James Henry Govier, painter, engraver and etcher, was born in 1910 to Henry and Mary in Buckinghamshire. When James was small the family moved to Wales where he attended school. Aged fourteen, he left to work at a tin mine. James attended Swansea School of Arts and Crafts during the evenings. His talent led to the award of a scholarship which allowed him to leave his employment and study full time. Exhibitions in Wales followed and then the offer of a place at the Royal College of Art which he took up in 1935. Friends with many in artistic circles including Augustus John and Dylan Thomas James was painted by Alfred Janes and Colin Moss. An associate the Royal College of Art led to the award of a travel scholarship which James could not take up because of the outbreak of war. Initially he joined the army but was seconded to the RAF where he made models for the Dambusters Raid and D Day. Discharged in 1945 he returned to live in Aylesbury with his family. James participated in several exhibitions held by the Aylesbury Art Society, on the second occasion submitting a selection of depictions of children. He also exhibited at the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition. Two years after the end of the war, James moved to Ipswich to train as a commercial display artist at the Ipswich School of Art. A member of the Ipswich Art Club he contributed pieces to many exhibitions. James accepted an appointment as art and woodwork teacher at Eye Grammar School moving to Diss when the former establishment closed. He retired in 1972, dying two years later. An exhibition of his work was held at Christchurch Mansion in Ipswich in 1993, and another in Diss. lole James’s work is held by the British Museum, the V & A, the National Portrait Galley, the Ashmolean along with museums in Wales.
