A lovely vintage Wetherigg A Schofield Penrith Salt Pig Slipware piece with the word Salt on the front and featuring a striking rich blue glaze. A Salt Pig is used to store salt and its large circular opening provides easy access whilst cooking. As it’s made of clay the porous material help to keeps salt from clumping in humid conditions. There are a couple of theories on its given name one of which is based on its rather obvious appearance resembling a pig. The other is from an old Scottish dialect referring to an earthenware pot as a “pig”. This piece is in good vintage condition, there is a very small chip on the back as shown in the picture and some slight glazing which doesn’t detract from its overall look or function. Measurements: Height: 25cm Width: 13cm (widest point) Depth: 15cm It has the Schofield, Penrith backstamp on the base and is a fabulous practical and decorative piece that would look great in any kitchen.
