This is a large drawing, known as a cartoon, made in preparation for a painting and is the only surviving large-scale drawing by Leonardo Da Vinci. 'The Leonardo Cartoon' depicts the Virgin Mary sitting on her mother Saint Anne's lap looking at a wriggling Christ Child. Saint Anne points up towards the sky indicating the child's divinity. Christ's cousin, Saint John the Baptist also leans against Anne's lap. Some parts of the drawing are densely shaded and contrasted with light, whilst others are simply indicated with outlines. In its original frame that compliments the print .
