This lovely example of Polish folk art has a particularly fine all over geometric design, and bears the original maker's label on the base. Typically known as 'pokerwork' or 'pyrography', the tradition of 'writing with fire' has existed since Egyptian times, but gained in popularity with the invention of electric tools in the early 20th Century. The box has the addition of inlaid brass wire to emphasize the design, and is in excellent vintage condition, with a satisfyingly close fitting hinged lid, and unmarked internally.
