They seem to me to show an impressionistic view with strongly contrasting colors and kept in a violently glowing color scheme. When the artist uses intermediate tones, such as in a motif with a city gate (on the back marked with A in pencil), he achieves a color effect that should appeal even to those who do not admire strong effects at all.
