Primitive wood & metal foot warmer carriage heater

A very well used antique primitive wood and tin foot warmer / carriage heater. Likely dating from the early 1800’s to provide warmth to the feet in a horse drawn carriage. The central opening would have originally housed a removeable tin container. Hot coals would have been placed in the container, which was then inserted into the central opening. The top is slatted, with a sheet of perforated tin sitting directly under the slats. The heat would have therefore escaped through the top. A blanket would have been placed on the legs and over the heater, to keep the sitters legs warm. The warmer is purely decorative and historic. It shows signs of significant wear and historic worm damage, particularly on the bottom skirt. There are light scorch marks on the inside, suggesting that it was definitely used for its intended purpose. It’s a charming curio that’s full of character, with lots of historic marks on display.
