Rare Doulton Persian Spray Plate

A rare and pretty cobalt blue and white large plate by Doulton in the design Persian Spray with a bold dark blue design of exotic fruit and blossom on a white background. The design, originally developed by Pinder Bourne who Doulton took over, was influenced by the Aesthetic movement and Japanese patterns which focus on the interplay between occupied and empty spaces. The decoration was transfer printed. On the base is a printed back stamp Doulton’s Persian Spray, an embossed mark with entwined ‘Ds’ encircled by Doulton Burslem under which is stamped 1886. The plate measures 27cm or 10.5 inches in diameter. There is some faint crackling and yellowing which is barely visible and does not detract from the piece.
