Rare Early 20th Century Lombok House Storage Box

This is a quirky conversation piece and would strike quite the pose on a large cabinet or table as a decorative piece… but its also a special place for storage, as the top half lifts off to reveal a large box space inside. There is also a small door on the top part that opens to reveal another place for storage too. These were popular back in the day as a wedding present. Made in Eastern Indonesia by the Sasak people of Lombok (island adjacent to Bali), the box is constructed of lontar palm leaves over a split bamboo frame and decorated with sewn on whelk shells. It was originally coloured in red and green as is evident in the covered areas. These are actually very rare and can fetch up to several hundred pounds.
