Rare Vintage Ridgeway Pedestal Dish

This was made by J & W Ridgeway, circa 1814-1830. The bottom is marked Portland Basket, Opaque China, JWR within a cartouche. The more common version of the Portland Basket pattern is in blue and white but this rarer depiction has elements picked out in shades of red. It has a scalloped gadroon rim and around the edge is decorated with flower garlands and butterflies. In the centre of the base is a pedestal dish full of flowers not dissimilar to how this piece could be used. This piece was made using, at the time, the relatively new technique of transfer printing where the design was printed onto originally animal glue and later, tissue paper which was then transferred to the piece. It was most commonly used for willow pattern but designs such as this followed. It measures 38 cm in length, 24 cm across and 13 cm high. Given its age it is in amazing condition with no visible cracks or defects. There is, however, some minor wear to the base. Please see the photographs....more
