Rare Vintage Ceramic Plate with Surreal Pansy Headed Smoking Tennis Player. Measurements are as follows ~ 22cm Diameter, 13cm Base Height from Surface 4cm This piece simply couldn't be left behind - it was so intriguing! A somewhat chintzy plate, edged with gold and cut out bows, the central feature is what appears to be a smoking tennis player of the 1930s with a pansy for their head. Whether this piece was made at that time, or in more recent years as a reclamation of the term 'pansy' - we feel it is very much a celebratory LGBTQ curiosity, and would make a wonderful additional to a picture wall. We presume it to be rare, as we can only find one other similar example online. It is marked in German, Gesetzlich Geschutzt - meaning Protected By Law. As always, we have picked this piece as it would look equally at home in a retro or modern aesthetic.
