A lovely example of the famous Staffordshire pottery mantlepiece dog, or “Wally dug”. He’s a handsome spaniel, full of character! He’s hand painted, and appears to be an older press mold piece probably dating from the late 19th century. Staffordshire dogs were a hugely popular British ornament in the 19th - early 20th century, and graced many a mantlepiece or windowsill. Usually in pairs, but often found singly, they are the quintessential homely British ornament. In good antique condition. There is a bit of wear and a surface crack at his foot, but this is perfectly stable and is to be expected in a piece of this age. ** Please do check the photos thoroughly as these form part of the description.
