Solitaire board carved from Soapstone with mid 20th century milk glass marbles, complete with cloth bag for storage. The rules for Solitaire were first laid out in 17th century France, being a game of patience for one player, using either pegs or, in this case marbles, on a board of between 33 and 45 holes. This board has 33 holes, which is the traditional English style of board, the French playing with 37, and Germans with 45. Created from several pieces of stone to emphasize the grains, the board is unmarked, with no chips or cracks, and the slight uneveness of the spacing indicates a handcrafted game board.
