Traditional Japanese Pottery - Horseback Sake Cup
+ £3.50 delivery (1-3 days)
This is a rare hodai-yaki (小代焼) horseback sake cup (Bajohai) from Kumamoto Prefecture. Shodai Ware has been crafted for over 400 years, dating back to the Edo period (1600–), and was officially recognised as a Japanese traditional craft in 2003. Potter mark inscribed at the bottom. Made from rich clay at the foot of Mt. Shodai, this cup has a smooth texture, deep earthy tones, and a soft lustre that makes it feel warm and inviting. The high base isn’t just for looks—it was originally designed for horseback riders to easily hold and exchange cups while on the move. The thin rim enhances both the aroma and flavour of sake, making this not just a beautiful piece but also a joy to use. A wonderful find and wonderful gift for lovers of Japanese ceramics, sake culture, or unique handcrafted pottery. 📏 Dimensions Height: 8.5cm Width: 6cm Condition ✅ Excellent condition – no chips, cracks, or repairs. 📸 Please check all photos carefully before purchasing!
