Adorable traditional style Japanese Kokeshi doll. Handpainted on wood. Signed by the artist on the base in Japanese characters. Measures 18cm tall. Her head can be removed. Traditionally, kokeshi are named and given to loved ones as gifts of friendship in Japan. Messages are written on paper and hidden in an aperture at the base. They are playful talismans for luck and positivity. There is a small space underneath this one, for a message on a tiny note - it’s just possible to see paper in the gap. I haven’t tried too hard to dislodge it as I don’t want to risk damaging the wood - it’s wedged in deep and tightly. In great condition, looks like new.
