An immaculate, circa 1890-1910, antique salt glazed puzzle jug by Joseph Bourne at Denby Pottery Derbyshire. A puzzle jug is a puzzle in the form of a jug, popular in the 18th and 19th centuries. Puzzle jugs of varying quality were popular in homes and taverns. An inscription typically challenges the drinker to consume the contents without spilling them, which, because the neck of the jug is perforated, is impossible to do conventionally. Incised on the underside with the potters mark before being sent for glazing. Well sprigged with several scenes from the time. Super salt glazed. Bourne Denby Pottery, also known as Joseph Bourne and Son Ltd, is a pottery company in Denby, Derbyshire that was founded in 1809: History The pottery was established on the estate of William Drury-Lowe after a seam of clay was discovered during road construction. Joseph Bourne, the son of William Bourne, took over the pottery in 1812 and ran it in tandem with the Belper Pottery until 1834.
