Oak sideboard by Gordon Russell of Broadway. Four central short drawers (cutlery insert in top drawer) flanked by two cupboard doors enclosing shelves and raised on chamfered tapered legs. Light oak finish with beautiful figuring to the top and Gordon Russell makers label on the back. Sturdy with solid construction as expected from this maker. Refinished with an ultra raw hard wax oil this piece is versatile and functional. Gordon Russell (1892 - 1980) was born in London. As a teenager he was inspired by the arts and crafts movement when he moved with his family to Broadway in the Cotswolds in 1904. After serving as an Officer in the First World War, he went on to establish himself as one of the most successful British furniture designers of the twentieth century. The company bearing his name came to be highly respected and regarded as a symbol of great quality and is still in business today. A museum of his work is available to visit in Broadway....more
