A beautiful and incredibly unique piece of earthenware, made in Portugal by Pereiras Valado. Decorative earthenware settled in Valado dos Frades, Portugal, in the 1940s, under the influence of the established factories in the neighbouring municipality of Alcobaça. The first factory was founded in 1944 and gave rise to a growing ceramic trade in the area, meaning hundreds of people could abandon traditional agricultural jobs. Pieces such as this were fired at high temperatures and coated with enamel before being painted with oxide paints. This particular piece takes an ornate shape with a monochrome colour palette, elegant gold detailing, and tiny cherubs sitting in relief on each corner. The base is printed with 'Pereiras Valado Made In Portugal' - original pieces included a hand written makers mark thus the nature of this printed version suggests it would have been produced in the latter half of the 20th century.
