Incredible vintage 1970s very heavy brass figurine of a farmer ploughing rice fields with his water buffalo. Comes from Cotabato city, Mindanao region in Philippines and made by the T’boli people. The Tboli people of the Philippines are not only known for their artful t’nalak weaves and other textiles made on their weaving looms; they are also held in high regard for their long tradition of making exquisite accessories and objects made of brass. The Tboli’s brass casting is a time-honored tradition that requires skill and mastery. Children learn the basics from parents or from older brass casters or brass smiths but are only allowed to handle the casting equipment when they turn 15 years of age. The actual making of these brass objects is a long intricate multistep process that produces these very unique to the region art pieces.
