A beautiful vintage pink porcelain cup and saucer decorated with vignettes of the people of rural Wales dressed in their traditional costume. Each vignette depicts a scene from their trip to the market place. The Welsh costume began in Wales in the rural countryside, with different variations depending on the location. This traditional dress became know as the costume of the wives and daughters of the farmers who were a bit better-off. It was also worn on special occasions and when going to market to sell their produce. During the 1830's the unique Welsh hat appeared, and by the 1840's became an icon of Wales This is an old piece of porcelain and photos clearly show the minor scuffs and marks in accordance with its use and age. Otherwise it is in good and usable condition. The cup is 7cm high and 8cm wide The saucer is 14cm in diameter.
