Expressionist oil landscape by Swedish artist Ivar Sture Oscar Hjertqvist (1907-1983). Using soft yet gestural brushstrokes, the landscape has a rich colour palette, with excellent use of colour. Painter and illustrator Hjertqvist was born in 1907 in Härnösand. He studied at the Higher School of Art and Design in Stockholm 1929-1932 and was awarded a scholarship from the Handicraft Association which allowed him to study further at the Académie de la Grande Chaumière in Paris and make study trips to England, Scotland, Germany, Hungary and the Balkans. He first worked as an advertising cartoonist and became a member of SAFFT in 1937. He has exhibited at Gummeson Gallery, Hackås Church and Murberget Church.
