Vintage Japanese lacquered wood two tier stacking bento box. Japanese artists and artisans create their work intent of serving a purpose in everyday life. Crafts are less about decorative artwork., and are more based on the idea of creating beauty through everyday usage. Hida Shunkei lacquerware is produced by skillfully assembling many thin boards together. What makes the style unique is the way in which the beauty of the wood is brought to light by the application of a transparent natural lacquer. The technique was first discovered in Japan in the 17th century. The lunchbox is square, and features two compartments plus an integrated carry handle. The top compartment and lid are removeable. The lid sits lightly and is probably best kept in place with an elastic tie, if the box is to be used away from the home. In good overall used vintage condition, with clear signs of previous usage. Dimensions are height 11cm (excluding handle ) x width 115.5cm x depth 15.5cm.
